Berko bribery scandal: Kofi Amoah demands action from Mahama and Attorney-General

Ghanaian businessman and economist Dr Kofi Amoah has challenged President John Dramani Mahama to direct the Attorney-General to pursue Ghanaian officials allegedly linked to the bribery scheme that led to the conviction of former Goldman Sachs banker and Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Managing Director Asante Kwaku Berko in the United States.

Dr Amoah said the conviction presents Ghana with an opportunity to demonstrate that its fight against corruption goes beyond political statements and extends to concrete investigations and prosecutions where evidence supports criminal wrongdoing.

In a commentary on social media, Dr Amoah urged President Mahama to task the Attorney-General with following the evidence emerging from the US proceedings and identifying any Ghanaian officials who may have participated in or benefited from the alleged bribery scheme.

“Have your Attorney-General pursue this case,” Dr Amoah urged.

His call comes after a federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, convicted Berko on August 6, 2026, over his role in a scheme involving more than US$1 million in bribes allegedly paid to Ghanaian officials in connection with the development and financing of a power plant under an agreement involving the Government of Ghana and Turkish energy company Aksa Enerji.
