GSA gives mattress firms one month to recall substandard products

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has given mattress manufacturing companies shut down for producing substandard products one month to recall their mattresses from the market or face further sanctions.

The Authority said the affected firms had already been directed to withdraw their products from circulation following investigations that found they were using unapproved materials in mattress production.

Speaking to journalists, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the GSA, Clement Kubati, said the companies had been formally notified and were expected to comply within the stipulated period.

“What I can say for the mattresses for now is that we have written to all the mattress manufacturing companies that we have locked down to do a product recall. We’ve given them one month notice to do that,” he said.

Mr Kubati stressed that the Authority remained committed to protecting consumers and ensuring standards were maintained across the market.

“I am using this opportunity to send a signal to Ghanaians that we have not gone to sleep. We are still on the ground and we are monitoring. We promote trade to protect consumers,” he added.

The directive follows a two day enforcement exercise carried out by the GSA and the Police SWAT Team on 18 and 19 May 2026 at Afienya and Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region.

The operation resulted in the closure of six companies involved in the manufacture of substandard mattresses.

According to the Authority, the exercise formed part of compliance measures first issued in October 2025, when the affected firms were instructed to halt operations and address regulatory breaches. The companies were eventually shut down after failing to meet the required standards.

Investigations and product testing conducted by the GSA found that the firms were using polystyrene materials instead of approved materials in the production of mattresses.

The affected companies are Jin Yuan Jia Mattress Manufacturing Plant, Monda Ghana Mattresses, ZXZ Company Limited, Rockfoam Mattress and 5A Home Company.
